Indian Wells (AP) – Angelique Kerber has reached the round of 16 at the Masters in Indian Wells. The former world number one defeated Darja Kassatkina 6-2, 6-1 on Sunday.
Because of Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine, the Russian is listed as a neutral player. “I’m very happy to be in the next round,” said Kerber. “It was a good game from me.”
In the round of 16, Kerber will meet Iga Swiatek from Poland for the first time in her career. The 20-year-old is number four in the world rankings, Kerber is currently in 16th place.
The Masters in the Californian desert is one of the most important tournaments on the WTA tour. The hard court event is worth $8,584,055. Kerber was in the final in 2019 and lost in the quarterfinals last year to the later winner Paula Badosa from Spain in the edition that was postponed to autumn due to Corona.
