Angelique Kerber failed in the second round of the WTA tournament in Miami.
The former world number one from Kiel lost 2:6, 3:6 in her opening match to four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka (Japan). In the first round, Kerber had a bye.
Kerber, seeded in 13th position, conceded a quick break in the first set and never really got into the game. After just 1:01 hours, Osaka, who had been knocked out by an insulting heckling and eliminated early in Indian Wells just over a week ago, converted her third match point to victory. On her way to the Wimbledon triumph in 2018, Kerber eliminated the Japanese star player in the round of 16.
With Kerber, the last German player from the field of participants in Florida said goodbye. Laura Siegemund and Nastasja Schunk were eliminated in the first round.
