Kendrick Lamar released his long-awaited fifth studio album MR. MORALE & THE BIG STEPPERS published. On the song “Father Time,” he briefly comments on the surprise reconciliation between Kanye West and Drake in 2021:
“When Kanye got back together with Drake I was a bit confused / I guess I’m not as mature as I think I have to heal,” Lamar raps on the track.
Lamar is dedicated to self-knowledge
“Father Time”, featuring a guest appearance by British musician Sampha, is the fifth song on MR. MORALE & THE BIG STEPPERS . On the track, Lamar takes a self-critical approach, analyzing his behavior and inability to show emotion. These problems stem from his childhood, when there was little room for compassion and love, as Lamar describes in the following lines:
“I got daddy issues, that’s on me
Lookin’ for, “I love you,” rarely empathizin’ for my relief
A child that grew accustomed, jumping up when I scraped my knee
‘Cause if I cried about it, he’d surely tell me not to be weak
Daddy issues, hid my emotions, never expressed myself
Men should never show feelings, being sensitive never helped
His momma died, I asked him why he goin’ back to work so soon?
His first reply was, “Son, that’s life, the bills got no silver spoon”
Reconciliation led to a benefit concert
After years of feuding, Kanye West and Drake buried their hatchet via social media post in 2021. Earlier, J Prince convinced Kanye West to formulate a public statement towards Drake. West complied with the request and publicly made a peace offering, which Drake agreed to.
The two rappers even played a benefit concert at the Coliseum in Los Angeles for inmate Larry Hoover. Hoover is a co-founder of the street gang Gangster Disciples and is serving six life sentences at the ADX Florence Correctional Facility in Colorado.
