32-year-old Kelsey Hatcher gave birth last Tuesday at the University of Alabama hospital in the American city of Birmingham.

Kelsey has known since she was a teenager that she has two uteruses. This rare congenital condition is called uterus didelphys. Only 0.3 percent of women are born with this condition. According to doctors, the chance of becoming pregnant in both uteruses at the same time was very small, one in a million to be precise. When it became known that the woman was pregnant in both wombs, she became international news. A special study was even devoted to her. Kelsey has already had three other children before the two girls. This time too she thought she was pregnant in one of the two wombs. “I gasped. We just couldn’t believe it,” she told the BBC.

Her pregnancy was completely normal. Professor Davis said both babies had been given “extra space to grow and develop.” According to Davis, that was because both babies had a uterus to themselves, unlike a regular twin pregnancy.

The birth was induced and required a lot of extra attention. For example, there was twice as much monitoring and double the number of staff. Her midwife said there were cheers from every room when the first baby was born at 7.45pm local time on December 19. The second girl was born more than ten hours later via caesarean section.

For a long time, doctors didn’t know what to call the phenomenon, but the girls are now described as fraternal twins. “In the end it was two babies in one belly at the same time,” said Professor Richard Davis, who led the delivery. “They just had different apartments.”
