celebritiesCan the Rolling Stones still get through one door with Paul McCartney (79)? That is the question that guitarist Keith Richards (78) was presented with in the podcast ‘Rolling Stone Music Now’. The reason was a rather unfortunate statement by McCartney last year.
Last year the New Yorker featured an extensive interview with Paul McCartney. It contained a striking quote from the singer/guitarist about the Rolling Stones: “I’m not sure I should say this, but they’re a blues cover band. Those are the Stones. I think we looked just that little bit further.”
Remarkable words, but Keith Richards saw no harm in them. “He said to the New Yorker, ‘That’s what I thought when I first heard them.’ Paul and I know each other quite well. So when I first read the interview, I said, ‘Ah, there’s seriously some stripping and editing here.’ The next day I got a message from Paul: ‘If you’ve read that crap, believe me, it’s all taken out of context.’”
The two famous bands have often shared a stab at each other in recent years. For example, Richards called ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ once was “junk”. Could McCartney’s sneer have something to do with it? “Could be, but Paul isn’t like that,” Richards said. “I felt sorry for him. He responded so quickly. If he had meant to say it, he wouldn’t have bothered to respond. Hey, Paul is a great guy. Come on, just look at the songs he wrote. You can’t tear down a man like that. When such little things get out in the press, we just ignore them.”
The Rolling Stones will be touring again in the coming months, to find their sixtieth anniversary. They will also visit Belgium on 11 July. Tickets are still available for their show at the King Baudouin Stadium.
