At the weekend, Niklas Süle was only substituted on by BVB coach Edin Terzic in the final phase of the away game at SV Darmstadt 98. Ex-national player Mario Basler doesn’t say anything good about the poor defender.
“Süle has all the prerequisites, he brings an incredible amount with him, but of course he also brings an incredible amount of kebabs and burgers,” said the 55-year-old in his podcast “Basler ballert”.
Background: Süle has been said to have weight problems for a long time, and the defensive man didn’t seem completely fit on Saturday evening either.
Basler now sees the Dortmund problem child at a crossroads. “I don’t know what he’s thinking or if he’s thinking anything at all, but he’s wasting everything,” the 1996 European champion sounded the alarm.
According to Basler, Süle’s place in the DFB selection is also at acute risk. “It has never been so easy to be a regular player in the national team,” he said. But the ex-Munich man is “not the one who can deal with certain situations”.
BVB: According to Basler, Süle is “ruining everything”
Basler could even imagine that Süle will soon “disappear from the scene completely.” After all, players “can’t always just brush their stomachs”.
However, he doesn’t expect insight from the BVB defender. “If he continues to think that he has to eat the burgers, that he has to go eat kebabs, then he should do that. But then he also has to expect that he won’t be playing anymore,” Basler rumbled.
Süle is “the only player for whom Puma makes XXL jerseys,” added the former Bayern professional: “They don’t normally do that.”
Although the 28-year-old would easily find a new club because of his CV, he would still be “ruining everything” at the moment. His contract with Borussia is valid until 2026.
