Japanese manufacturers have always been rather wait-and-see on the electric front: so far no one had ever dared so much (with the exception of Honda, which had already launched itself into some electric scooter models, but only popular on Asian markets). But now it was Kawasaki who broke the delay: at Intermot, the show underway in Cologne, it unveiled the EV, its first electric motorcycle, to the public.

The bike, still defined in official communications as a “prototype”, was actually seen in action at the last Suzuka 8 Hours; in fact it is a model almost ready for production, from which only the proverbial Japanese excess of prudence separates it. The general manager for Europe Masaya Tsuruno has nevertheless confirmed that this will be the basis on which the first production electric motorcycle will be developed. Which we imagine will not be very different from the model exhibited in the German review.

The commitment to electrification was confirmed by President Hiroshi Ito (who said there will be three battery-powered motorcycle launches by 2022), although Kawasaki is still looking around: Masaya Tsuruno added that electric propulsion and biofuels they were considered in parallel with the research on hydrogen as a possible solution to the achievement of carbon neutrality.
