Jamie Deckert’s cat Ozzy from Eindhoven had been missing for almost two years. The animal had run away and since then there has been no trace. Until last Monday. Jamie got a call in the middle of the night saying her cat had been found. “I only cried,” she says in radio program Afslag Zuid on Thursday.
On October 8, 2021, Ozzy ran away from home. That was difficult for Jamie and her boyfriend Patrick. “We’ve had Ozzy since he was a kitten. We adopted him with another kitten. When he was gone, it was very sad,” she recalls.
Jamie did everything to find her pet again. She hung up posters and flyers and contacted Amivedi, a foundation dedicated to missing and found pets. “We even called in sniffer dogs to try and find Ozzy, but it didn’t yield anything.”
“He won’t leave us alone anymore.”
So until this week. Jamie got a call from animal control at 1am. “The employee asked if it was true that I had lost my cat and suddenly listed all the details of Ozzy. ‘We have him here’, he said afterwards. I asked if he was dead or alive,” says Jamie in disbelief.
Ozzy was still alive and the animal control came to take him that very night. The reunion was very emotional, says Jamie. “I just cried. I almost didn’t believe it.” The cat also seemed happy to see his owners again. “He immediately crawled into my lap. Since he came back, he won’t leave us alone.”
“After two years you assume the worst.”
To make sure Ozzy was okay, Jamie and Patrick went straight to the vet. “He had to get out of bed in the middle of the night. But luckily the doctor couldn’t find anything. Ozzy is completely healthy.”
On Thursday, Jamie still can’t believe she has her beloved pet back. “I could not have dreamed this,” she says. “I didn’t expect it anymore. Ozzy was neatly chipped, so I thought someone would read the chip if he was found. After two years you assume the worst.”
