Karl Lagerfeld estate before auction for viewing in Munich

The famous fingerless gloves, a Karl Lagerfeld teddy bear, a portrait with his cat Choupette: such objects from the fashion icon’s estate can be viewed in Munich – and will soon be auctioned in Cologne. “His private collection gives an insight into his sources of inspiration and his universe,” said Bettina Beckert, head of the Munich branch of the auction house Sotheby’s, on Thursday.

Two tranches of the Lagerfeld estate had already been auctioned off in Monaco and Paris last year. Together they had brought in 18.2 million euros, four times the preliminary estimate.

A selection of the third part is now available for preview at Sotheby’s Munich from Friday to Sunday. The objects will be auctioned at Sotheby’s in Cologne. 300 lots will be offered in two live auctions, divided into an evening auction on May 4th and a day auction on May 5th. A further 250 lots will be auctioned online from April 29th to May 6th.

The preliminary estimate for all 550 lots is around 700,000 euros. The price range is between ten and 80,000 euros. Most of the objects come from Lagerfeld’s last residence in Louveciennes near Versailles in France. The villa from the 18th century was mainly furnished with furniture and advertising posters from his German homeland. A special focus was German art of the early 20th century.

Furniture by the architect and designer Bruno Paul will be auctioned off. There are also dark sunglasses, suit jackets, shoes and an ensemble of accessories from his cat Choupette, who kept him company for the last eight years of his life. (dpa)
