Karin (47) died in Amsterdam shooting: “She was a very sweet, special woman”

The woman who was shot dead yesterday in front of her home on De Wittenstraat is 47-year-old Karin. She was the mother of three children and worked as a nurse specialist at the OLVG. “She was a very sweet, special woman. It touches us all very deeply and we are all speechless,” said a spokesperson for the hospital.

In front of the staircase, the 47-year-old from Amsterdam was shot dead around 8 a.m. yesterday. The suspected shooter, a 57-year-old neighbour, then fled on foot and was found lifeless shortly afterwards in a parking garage on De Wittenkade. The garage is within walking distance of the place where Karin was shot.

The employees of the OLVG were told yesterday that their beloved colleague had died in the shooting. Karin worked at the OLVG for almost ten years. She was a nurse specialist in the department of stomach, intestinal and liver diseases. She was also part of the hospital’s research team. “Everyone is in shock. We have lost a colleague and that is horrible. Everyone takes care of each other and we try to comfort each other,” says the spokesperson for the hospital.

Reason still unclear

According to several local residents, one of Karin’s children was present at the shooting. The exact cause of the shooting is still unclear. Several local residents say that the man would have been confused. Others say the cause may have been a dispute between neighbours. “He regularly complained about nuisance from his neighbors and has threatened to kill a child in the neighborhood in the past.”

Landlord Ymere cannot say whether the neighbor was known to them as a nuisance and refers to the police. The police can not say anything about this yet and let it be known that the investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
