Kanye West and Yeezy fined artist $300,000

Another day goes by and another Kanye West saga unfolds.

The rapper and designer, now known as Ye, and his brand Yeezy have now been ordered to pay New York-based creative Katelyn Mooney over $300,000. The reason for this is the failure to show up for a court date.

A default judgment in Mooney’s favor was sought in Manhattan Supreme Court when no counsel for West or his brand appeared or responded to the court papers.

Mooney originally argued that West and Yeezy owe her over $300,000 in damages and unpaid bills after she was not paid in full for a photoshoot last September.

The artist was hired to create images for Yeezy’s new SHDZ sunglasses collection. She was to receive $110,000 (about €99,611) for this, of which she said she only received $15,000 (around €13,583).

In her complaint, freelancer Mooney said the lack of payment forced her to “take out a significant amount of credit and use her credit cards to the max” to pay her bills, and called West’s behavior “exploitative”.

No end in sight

This news comes just days after it was announced that Adidas with a lawsuit from its investors was confronted with the controversial figure regarding business relations.

The complaint alleges that the sportswear giant’s executives knew of West’s problematic behavior long before an anonymous letter from employees uncovered a series of “problematic behaviors”.

NBC News reports that West and Yeezy still have $600,000 in unpaid back taxes dating back to 2021.

The media outlet added that it had uncovered 17 US government-issued garnishments against three of West’s businesses, including a charity on his behalf, in California.
