Leipzig’s joker Kevin Kampl decided the game in the Bundesliga against SC Freiburg with a strong solo – and thus gave RB an important victory in the race for the Champions League.
On Saturday (May 6th, 2023) RB Leipzig won 1-0 (0-0) in Freiburg. Substitute Kevin Kampl was the man of the day, because he scored the golden goal in a rather tough duel thanks to a one-off (73′).
With a win, Freiburg (fifth place, 56 points) would have had at least fifth place and thus secured participation in the Europa League, but now they have to be patient. Leipzig, meanwhile, is now third in the table (57 points) in the fight for a place in the Champions League, with three remaining game days to go.
Leipzig coach Rose praises Kampl and the defensive
Leipzig coach Marco Rose praised after the game on the sports show microphone next to the “great single action” von Kampl also the defensive performance: “We defended diligently and passionately. And we deserved to win.” In the race for the premier class, however, his team now has to maintain its form “confirm”.
His counterpart, Freiburg coach Christian Streich, summed it up: “We could have fallen behind in the first 15 minutes.” Kampl’s goal “happy at the time” been. Streich did not want to talk about his own Champions League ambitions in the final sprint.
RB Leipzig initially more powerful
Just four days after Leipzig’s 5-1 win in the DFB Cup semifinals, SC Freiburg had something to make up for in front of their home crowd. But the first ten minutes belonged to the powerful Leipzigers. Timo Werner failed at the post (5th), later Werner and Christopher Nkunku prevented each other from finishing (27th) and carelessly missed the next big chance.
After that, Leipzig’s urge to attack, which had a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal in the first half, decreased. RB striker Dani Olmo was worked well by Freiburg and was hardly a factor. The SC then acted defensively in a concentrated manner and won most of the duels. However, the accuracy of the fit was lacking. That’s why there wasn’t much going on at the front for the home side.
Freiburg is waiting for a flash of inspiration – but Kampl has it
After the restart it stayed that way. It got tough, and Leipzig, too, often got entangled somewhere between the penalty areas with their technically strong individuals.
But then the knot burst after Kampl had replaced Amadou Haidara, who had been booked, (53′). And thanks to a furious solo by Kampl, who started about 40 meters from goal. First he got an escort, then he was lucky because his failed pass bounced back to him in the penalty area – and pushed in ice cold.
Freiburg struggled again in the hope of an offensive flash of inspiration, but this did not happen.
Freiburg has to go to Berlin, Leipzig to Bremen
In the Bundesliga, SCF will now continue with an away game in Berlin-Köpenick against 1. FC Union (Saturday, 3.30 p.m.). Leipzig hosts Werder Bremen (Sunday, 5.30 p.m.).
