Kamasi Washington: New album “Fearless Movement”

Jazz star Kamasi Washington confirms his first record in six years will be released on May 3rd.

The musician describes “Fearless Movement” as a “dance album” in a statement. So a dance record with saxophone? Not quite. Washington made it clear in a statement that this should not be taken entirely literally. “Dance is movement and expression, and in a way it’s the same as music – you express your mind through your body. That’s what drives this album.”

Another important theme of “Fearless Movement” is fatherhood. An inspiration that the musician can draw from his own life. He has been the father of a daughter himself for several years. According to reports, she will also be heard on the LP. Also taking part are André 3000, Thundercat, George Clinton, BJ the Chicago Kid, D Smoke and Terrace Martin (member of Washington’s group Dinner Party).

You can also hear and see the first track from the album: “Prologue”. Fun fact: Contrary to what the eight-minute title suggests, “Prologue” is actually the conclusion of “Fearless Movement.” The video shows quite clearly what Washington might mean by the focus on body movement.
