D66 leader and Deputy Prime Minister Sigrid Kaag thinks it is “regrettable” that the cabinet has fallen due to disagreements about asylum policy, she said after the extra council of ministers. According to Kaag, “Nobody benefits from a standstill due to a political crisis” given the major challenges facing the Netherlands.
Kaag was Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation in the Rutte III cabinet and Minister of Finance in the now fallen Rutte IV cabinet. She said on Friday evening that she did not yet know whether she would like to become party leader for D66 again in the upcoming elections. Kaag has previously indicated that she is struggling with the state of affairs in politics in The Hague and with all threats to her address.
