The “day after” passed without any shocks. Juventus found themselves at Continassa after the defeat against Udinese with divided groups, between those who played on Monday evening and those who didn’t. Only in the next few days will Massimiliano Allegri speak to the team, probably to try to raise his morale. A series of one point in three games hasn’t been seen at Juve since last April, when things got even worse (three defeats in a row against Lazio, Sassuolo and Napoli). But then the Bianconeri had no championship ambitions and were going through a delicate moment also and above all off the pitch. This time, despite Max’s constant denials, at Continassa they had seriously entertained the idea of competing for the title against Inter. And the last three days have, in fact, dampened the enthusiasm a bit, as evidenced by the whistles at the Stadium on Monday evening. Juventus must start moving again so as not to burn the good things done in the previous months and, in the meantime, plan for the future, also starting from what the pitch is saying. For example, the match against Udinese rekindled all the doubts about Federico Chiesa.

Renewal or not?

In recent months, the entourage of the former Fiorentina player and Juve’s transfer market men have started a dialogue to extend the contract expiring in 2025. A negotiation, however, that is far from simple: Chiesa earns over 5 million euros net every year. year and is returning from complicated seasons, also due to the bad injury suffered in January 2022 in Rome (rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of the left knee). In Juve’s idea, the renewal would have the dual function of avoiding the danger of losing the player in a year on a free transfer and at the same time lowering his amortization rate, so that his eventual farewell would more easily lead to a capital gain. But the performance of Chiesa’s last months, also conditioned by frequent stops due to minor physical problems, and the simultaneous explosion of Kenan Yildiz could convince the Bianconeri to say goodbye to the blue in the summer, renewal or not. Even against Udinese Fede, despite trying to mix things up, had little impact, both as a second striker in the first half and as a left winger in the second half. The feeling is that after the good start, with 4 goals in the first month of the championship, Chiesa has once again become a tactical misunderstanding in Allegri’s 3-5-2.

From Kostic to Kean

However, Federico is not the only Juventus player with a big question mark on his back. At Juventus, for example, they are waiting to know the extent of Paul Pogba’s disqualification. The anti-doping prosecutor has asked for a four-year disqualification for the Frenchman, but even if the sanction were half that, it is unlikely that the Lady would be willing to wait for it. Moise Kean, however, has slipped to the bottom of the attacking pecking order and, for this reason, was loaned to Atletico in January, before he failed a medical in Madrid and was sent back. The attacker, still out of action due to a tibia problem, has a contract expiring in 2025 and, in the summer, Juve will have to study a solution, possibly a permanent one. The problem is always the same, the high salary (3.5 million per year) which discourages suitors. But a bit like what was done for Arthur last summer, Cristiano Giuntoli and his collaborators could focus, in the absence of offers, on a renewal to spread part of the salary and facilitate the loan elsewhere. Against Udinese, however, Filip Kostic did not take the field, basically for tactical reasons (with Chiesa as second striker Allegri often used a different winger such as Andrea Cambiaso on the left). The Serbian, however, has dropped significantly in level in 2023-24, so much so that his stay at Juve next year is now far from certain. Already in January, clubs in Saudi Arabia had explored his name and, should they present themselves at Continassa with a proposal, they would be listened to. In a Juve that focuses and will focus on young people, Samuel Iling Junior is still disappointing, whose growth path seems to have stalled. During the season, the Englishman has always given the impression of being a fish out of water in Allegri’s tactical board, ending up playing little (and badly). He too could end up on the transferable list. While Alex Sandro, in the last months of his contract with Juve, will certainly leave.

The future

So far who can leave Turin. But who will the Bianconeri start with next year? Budgetary needs do not allow us to consider the big names, from Bremer to Vlahovic, untransferable regardless, despite the probable return to the Champions League. More solid, however, is the situation of young people like Kenan Yildiz or emerging players like Cambiaso. A second contract renewal is already scheduled for the Turkish starlet, after the one at the end of August, with a consequent adjustment of the salary. The winger established himself as a starter in his first season at Juventus, surprising himself first and foremost, as revealed on Monday evening: “I didn’t think I would play so much straight away,” Cambiaso said sincerely. And who knows, even in the years to come the former Genoa player will still surprise himself and others.
