Juve, it’s inactive balls alarm: in the second round 70% of the goals conceded were born like this

Set kicks are the main cause of Juventus troubles: 7 of the 11 goals conceded since January have come from set pieces. And the Allianz is no longer the old fort

Yet it moves, indeed it does not. Which is even worse. Because it is from set kicks that the worst problems came – read goals conceded – for Juve, in the second round. A fact that cannot fail to alert Allegri and C., given that the goals from inactive balls represent almost 70% of the total goals conceded from January onwards: 7 out of 11, in every variety of set pieces. On the other hand, Juve is always very sparing of goals on inactive ball, which further widens the gap, but also the reflection at Juventus. To say: based on the Opta data in the second round only Spezia has conceded more goals from a direct free kick than Juve: 3 against 2.

Corner, free kicks, penalties: nothing is missing

Mertens, Abraham, Mkhitaryan, Pellegrini (Lorenzo), Malinovskyi, Belotti, Zurkowski, La Mantia Sabiri, Calhanoglu, Pedro: he is not the most stoned of the formations, but they are the 11 who have pierced Juve in 2022, starting from that Juve -Napoli which inaugurated the second round. Mertens scored from action, on an assist from Politano, and this was the first of the 4 goals conceded by the bianconeri in open play. Against Roma, at the Olimpico, Juve, despite winning, capitulated three times, two of which on a set piece: once on a corner, one on a direct free kick. An indirect punishment was instead fatal in Bergamo (1-1 the final), signed by Malinovskyi. If Torino found a draw on action, Empoli wounded Juve twice out of two with set kicks: on action from the flag and on an indirect free kick. With Juve still taking home the three points, but the final result has no relevance, in this journey among the goals conceded. The same thing happened in Genoa, with Sampdoria that did not collect points but found the goal on a Sabiri free-kick. The rest is recent history, from the very bloody penalty of Calhanoglu who killed the dreams of the Juventus Scudetto, to the goal from Pedro, who only scared Juventus.

The neighbor’s stadium is (almost) always better

Another food for thought for the Old Lady arises from the comparison between the home budget and the external budget, because the conclusion is that the Allianz Stadium is no longer the ancient fort on which Juve could bet. On the contrary. In this championship the team has scored more points away (32 in games in 16 games) than at home (30 in 16 games) in this championship, scoring a good 59% of the goals scored away: 29 out of 49 total. It is no coincidence that the Bianconeri far from Turin have been unbeaten since the end of October, to be exact from the knockout against Verona, while four of Juve’s six defeats in this championship have come at home. A trend confirmed in the second round: the Juventus performance after the halfway point is four wins and two draws in six away matches, against four wins, two draws and one defeat in seven home games.
