For the Englishman it would be his first PGA title since he won at Torrey Pines in 2019
Aaron Rodgers won the Pro-Am tournament
The British Justin Rose was the big winner this Sunday in Pebble Beach by culminating an impressive third round with six strokes under par that allowed him to start the last and definitive round as leader. The day could not be finished in Monterey and the tournament will be decided this Monday.
The third round was dominated by the Europeans, with Swedish Jonas Blixt and English Callum Tarren at -8two strokes less than a Rose who stormed the lead thanks to his five birdies and a fantastic eagle at 16.
A total of 75 players made the cut to the final round, which featured a very close battle for the ultimate victory between seven golfers. Aside from the aforementioned Justin Rose, there were the Americans Brendon Todd, Peter Malnati, Denny McCarthy, Beau Hossler, and Keith Mitchellplus the Canadian Taylor Pendrith.
Pendrith was the only one of them who was able to finish his tour this SundayWith an excellent eight-under-par last day that leaves him a -12 card, his chances of winning the title are slim and it depends on a debacle of the top four finishers.
The Canadian can at least take the honor of becoming the first player, since 2013, to make 64 strokes or less in a final round.
The distance between this group of players was barely two or three shots in most of their tours. With special mention for Justin Rose, who closed the day with nine holes completedin which he had achieved two birdies and an eagle.
The Englishman will have to endorse this Monday, in the eight and a half holes that remain to be played, that first place that he would give his first PGA title since winning at Torrey Pines in 2019. It would mean his eleventh victory on the circuit in his entire career.
Denny McCarthy, second classified with -13 and playing the 16th hole at the horn, is about to break his own record for birdies in a round, he has nine this Sunday and with two more he would surpass it. If he succeeded, he would embarrass Rose in defending the lead.
After knowing the suspension of the game this Saturday, there were nine golfers who dropped out of the tournament with an eye toward being able to properly prepare for the next PGA match, this week in Phoenix. Two of them had to be this Monday in Arizona to dispute their qualification for the final round.
The tournament will resume this Monday. starting at eight in the morning (local time), after being paused due to lack of light at 5:33 p.m.
The Pro-Am goes to Aaron Rodgers
The third round of the Pro-Am tournament was completed early on Sunday, which did not have a cut or advanced towards the final day. Once the remaining holes were played, the couple formed by the Packers quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, and the Canadian professional Ben Silverman, consolidated their leadership and finished with -26.
They suffered to win, because the duo formed by Peter Malnati and Dan Colleran approached them to just one stroke away. The former president of FedEx did not succeed on this occasion, but he already has his name on the wall of winners of previous editions.
Aaron Rodgers was very satisfied with the victory: “It means a lot to me, it’s something I’ve always had on my wish list. I played at Tahoe for 18 years and never got higher than eighth.”
It was a great result considering that Rodgers confessed that only last Monday had he grabbed a golf club. The previous occasion was on his vacation before the start of the NFL preseason.
They closed with a great performance Pau Gasol as Gareth Bale, two of the sensations among amateurs. The Spaniard finished in the top nine along with Mark Hubbard with a -18 card, while the Welshman, paired with Joseph Bramlett signed a -16 and finished among the top 16.
