Just like real: Oudeschild dike stairs covered with a photo of a denomination

When you stand straight in front of it, it seems as if there is a denomination on the site of a dike staircase in Oudeschild. In other words: a door in the dike. But nothing is less true. Step by step, photos of a denomination have been added, which form a whole from a distance.

The photos were applied to the dike stairs last Friday, according to media partner Texel Courant.

Old painter and photographer Richard Heerschap was asked to decorate the dike stairs in this way. Restoring the denomination was a wish of the villagers for many years. He was taken away in 1980. Ten years ago, a large majority of the council was in favor of reinstating the denomination, but in 2016 it turned out that there was not in it anyway.

The reason why the Oudeschilders were so eager to have a denomination similar to the one in Den Oever was to attract more tourism. “Many people do not know that behind the stairs is the harbor, where there is much to experience, such as seal tours,” Heerschap told NH Nieuws.

Upholstering the stairs was not so simple. Heerschap took a photo of the denomination in Tiel and rebuilt it piece by piece so that it fit in this spot.

There may be a sequel soon, Heerschap said last month. “If we like it, we want to do the other side of the stairs.” The photographer made four different suggestions for the photo cladding of the stairs, and Oudeschilders opted for the denomination. “But there was also a lot of demand for the lambs, so who knows.”
