Jury begins deliberation in Depp libel case against Heard

The jury in the libel case of American actor Johnny Depp against his ex-wife Amber Heard has deliberated. After a six-week trial in which Depp and Heard accused each other of domestic violence, the seven-member jury will deliberate on a verdict.

Earlier on Friday, the legal teams of the 58-year-old actor and the 36-year-old actress held their closing arguments. Depp’s team accused Heard of “saying anything to prove her right”. Heard’s team, on the other hand, noted that “domestic violence also occurs when there is no evidence”.

The case between Depp and Heard has been going on for six weeks. The former lovers have both testified in court. Witnesses were also heard for both Johnny and Amber. The case is very lively on social media and there is a lot of speculation about who will ultimately win this case.

The actor sued his ex-wife after she wrote an op-ed for the American newspaper The Washington Post in 2018, in which she said she was a victim of domestic violence. Although Depp was not mentioned by name, according to the 58-year-old actor it would be obvious to readers that it was about him. And although Heard has stated under oath in recent weeks that she is not the author of the piece in question, she stated on Thursday that she is the author of the article, “to show people how influential men like Johnny Depp are”.
