Jürgen Klopp: national coach? DFB vice-president comments

Jürgen Klopp’s impending departure from Liverpool FC is sparking speculation about his future. Now a leading DFB official has spoken about a possible job as a national coach.

After Jürgen Klopp’s farewell announcement, the leadership of the German Football Association also gave the Liverpool coach good words.

“I don’t think we need to talk about the fact that Jürgen Klopp is a brilliant coach. We don’t need to talk about the fact that he could also be a candidate for national coach,” said DFB Vice President Ronny Zimmermann at the weekend Munich. “But now I’m hoping for a good European Championship with an ideally great outcome for Germany against every chance. We don’t have a chance, so we’ll use it.”

“The time for wishes is over”

Klopp (56) announced his resignation as coach of Liverpool FC on Friday after this season (read more about this here). His contract with the Reds actually ran until mid-2026. The German coach justified this decision by saying that he was running out of energy. The statement about the lack of energy raised considerable doubts about the quickly emerging idea that Klopp could take over the German national team in the summer after the home European Championship. The DFB is planning with Julian Nagelsmann up to and including the European Championships. The cooperation has been agreed until then.

“No club, no country for next year. And no other English club ever. I can promise that, even if I run out of food,” Klopp added at an LFC press conference late this afternoon. He doesn’t even rule out the end of his career.

When asked whether he would like Klopp to be a national coach one day, Zimmermann replied with a laugh: “The time for wishes is over, that’s before Christmas.” First of all, we hope for a good home European Championship. “And then we talk about the national coach and not about wishes. Then we talk to the new national coach and whoever it is, everything is fine. I could live well with Jürgen Klopp, like many others, I think,” said Zimmerman.
