Jumbo World Cup advertising causes outrage on social media

Supermarket chain Jumbo’s new commercial for the World Cup has sparked outrage on social media.

The commercial shows a couple of construction workers walking polonaise. That is sensitive because the tournament in Qatar is controversial because of the poor working conditions for the guest workers who had to make the stadiums.

“Jumbo should really be ashamed of this advertising for the World Cup in Qatar,” someone said on Twitter. “How shameless do you want it to be?”

Another calls it “very stupid and naive”. “Seems to me totally inappropriate and as far as I’m concerned Jumbo will stop advertising immediately.”

Jumbo was unable to respond immediately. The super stated last month that it would focus exclusively on the Orange Legion in its communications about the World Cup. “We are well aware that there are sensitivities surrounding this World Cup in Qatar. We have carefully considered the way in which we respond to the Orange feeling this year before and during the World Cup.”
