Staying on the bike for one more stage and Jonas Vingegaard has won the 2023 Tour de France. With a lead of 7 minutes and 29 seconds, the Dane will start the final stage to Paris on Sunday. “Yes, congratulations are in order,” says Wilco Kelderman.
The Dutchman was able to stay with leader Vingegaard for a long time, but had to pass when the later stage winner Tadej Pogacar on the Col du Platzerwasel attacked. Normally the Dutch team still has Sepp Kuss, but the American crashed hard early in the stage and lost his top 10 ranking; he finishes the Tour in twelfth. “It’s over,” says Kelderman at the NOS. “The satisfaction is very great. This is the highest achievable, to dominate as a team in the Tour de France.”
,,It was still really chaotic today, especially after Kuss fell. But we made it through the day well. It gives me a good feeling that I was able to ride like this in this Tour. The level was super good,” said Kelderman, who was supposed to ride the Giro first, but was added to the Tour selection due to an injury. “Last year I won the Giro with Jai Hindley, which was also very nice. Here I am a real team player, that’s different, but just as nice as far as I’m concerned. Riding through France with such a strong team gives a very nice feeling.”
To enjoy
Dylan van Baarle was also part of that strong team. “It’s great that we’re going to Paris in yellow. We wanted to go for the stage win and UAE wanted the same, so we piggybacked on that a little bit today. It was chaotic again and very busy along the road,” said the Dutch champion, who is participating in his first Tour with Jumbo-Visma. “It’s great to experience this right away. I did my best. Tomorrow we will enjoy ourselves.”
Jonas Vingegaard: ‘Can’t quite believe it yet’
“We shouldn’t do anything stupid tomorrow, but if all goes well I’ll win my second Tour de France,” said the wearer of the yellow in the interview afterwards. “I can’t quite believe it yet. We fought for three weeks. I think it was fun to watch, but I also enjoyed the battle with Tadej. I enjoyed every day in yellow.
