Jumbo takes extra measures against shoplifting: extra security guards, cameras and spot checks | Economy

Supermarket chain Jumbo is taking extra measures against shoplifting. There will be more camera surveillance and more intensive random checks at self-checkouts. In some stores, an extra security guard also comes to assist the regular staff. Jumbo recently announced that 100 million euros are stolen in its stores every year.

In addition to all the safety measures implemented, customers who have properly scanned all groceries will be rewarded for this; From mid-March there will be a wheel that people can spin after an error-free sample.

Jumbo is serious about shoplifting. The 100 million that the supermarket loses to theft accounts for approximately 1 percent of its turnover. The group says that customers will ‘regularly’ have to deal with ‘additional measures and checks’. In concrete terms, this means extra communication in the stores to remind customers to scan all groceries and pay for them. Furthermore, there will be more and clear camera surveillance in all stores: “Not only as a preventive measure, but also for investigation and evidence.”

Bag checks

The capacity for sampling will also be expanded and the supermarket will work with artificial intelligence that ‘enables targeted sampling’. From now on, a long receipt will always come out of the device, making ‘checks simple when customers have already passed the cash register.’ Jumbo also promises a ‘simple procedure for settling shoplifting’, which carries a fine of 181 euros. Shoplifters are also more likely to be banned from shopping.

On a trial basis, additional security guards will also be deployed at the self-checkouts in some stores. Stricter bag checks will also take place in these test stores.
