Julian Verkerk from Roden wins prizes at the Assen Film Festival

Julian Verkerk from Roden has tonight at the International Film Festival Assen (IFA) with Hunter won the Best Northern Film award. He won in the category North Stars.

For the short film Hunter Verkerk designed and built various pieces of scenery, such as a roadside restaurant, a petrol station and a German border crossing. This happened in several places in North Drenthe and Groningen.

The jury praises Verkerk: “With surprising twists and turns, it is dryly comical Hunter a beautifully stylized satire on today’s society. Commendable is the talent of the maker who brings together multiple disciplines in his sympathetic ‘gesamtkunstwerk’.”

Madeleine Holman won the prize for Best Dutch Film in the KersVers competition, which focuses on female directors or those who identify as women. “Homan introduces this fascinating and wistful word in her balanced animation film Coat. Particularly charming didactic film that addresses a loaded subject in a sweet but penetrating way: the fears of young children,” said the jury.

The entries for CherryVerse and North Stars ranged from documentaries to animations, all shorter than 45 minutes. In addition to being awarded the title of ‘Best Dutch Film’ and ‘Best Northern Film’, the winners will receive 1000 euros. They can spend the amount on their next film project.
