Julian Lennon explains his complicated relationship with the Beatles’ hit “Hey Jude”

In a recent interview, Julian Lennon, son of the late Beatles musician John Lennon, explains his complicated relationship with “Hey Jude.”

“I have to say it’s a love-hate relationship,” says the musician during his appearance on the “Club Random With Bill Maher” podcast. “I have probably heard the song and all its versions more times than any other person alive. Even close friends send me [Videos von] Kids in diapers playing guitar and singing “Hey Jude,” which I really don’t need. I am without question grateful that this song exists. But the other thing that people don’t understand is that it’s a strong and dark reminder of what happened.”

“The fact that my father left us — left my mother and me behind. That was a point where everything changed, where everything fell apart, where everything was dark and sad. “I mean, I was only three, but I realized something was wrong, you know?” Julian continues.

Beatles bassist Paul McCartney wrote the track for Julian Lennon in 1968 after John left his mother. A year later he married Yoko Ono. The original title was “Hey Jules.”

“I started with the idea of ’Hey Jules’ — which was Julian — ‘take a sad song and make it better,'” McCartney explained in 1997. “Hey, try to deal with this horrible thing. I knew it wouldn’t be easy for him. I always feel sorry for children in divorces.” The bassist still performs the song at his solo concerts today.
