Jukka Tammi tells how the iconic egg cup dance came about.
MATTI MATIKAINEN
– I have been hearing about it for 27 years. My kids also watched it on YouTube.
Jukka Tammiegg cups and an air guitar solo with the World Cup trophy in 1995 will not be forgotten.
– It was just intuition. Through music, I went spinning and just played the air guitar. I didn’t dance for the camera, but for the guys. Yle’s photographer just happened to be there, Tammi says.
The moment has become so iconic, that many sports fans who weren’t even born at the time of the Lions’ first world championship know that.
– If it would remain as iconic as it is, then fine.
Tammi wouldn’t mind talking about the whole topic, but gets excited when the discussion turns to the gold party of the Beijing Olympics.
– It felt good when they did it, the Pirkkalan says.
Lions’ Olympic gold guards Jussi Olkinuora and Frans Tuohimaa imitate Tamme’s performance in China.
TV dance again
JARNO JUTI
More than 16 years after the World Cup gold party, Tammi danced for the TV people again. He was with Maikkarin Dancing with the Stars in the program.
– I have danced at some weddings and parties after the program.
A politician who participated in the same program format Antti “Bar” Kaikkonen was asked in the last decade to give a May Day speech to supporters of the center party in Pirkkala. Instead of speaking at the event, Kaikkonen was wanted to dance in the middle of the market.
– Thank God I haven’t been asked to answer, Tammi laughs.
– Sometimes, though, women have applied to dance – luckily, rarely.
A video of Jukka Tamme’s iconic dance can be seen in the attached video at about the eight minute mark.
