Judoka Sanne van Dijke from Heeswijk Dinther has won the Grand Slam of Baku. The number three of the Olympic Games was too strong for the Belgian Gabriella Willems in the final of the class up to 70 kilograms on ippon.
The 27-year-old Van Dijke had been the boss of the last four compatriot Hilde de Jager. She won five matches in Azerbaijan, four of which on ippon. Only against Sara Rodriguez did she win on waza-ari. At the beginning of this year, Van Dijke was also the best at the Grand Slam of Tbilisi and at the beginning of October she won bronze at the World Cup in Uzbekistan.
De Jager eventually missed a medal. In the battle for a bronze medal, she lost to the Austrian Michaela Polleres.
In the class up to 63 kilograms, Geke van den Berg had to settle for silver. Van den Berg was the lesser of the Israeli Inbal Shemesh in the final on ippon.
