Lars van Oostrum from Wildervank reached the quarter-finals of the Junior Judo World Championships in Odivelas, Portugal on Friday.
The 20-year-old Van Oostrum, competing in the class up to 90 kilos, defeated the Estonian Patrik Roostfeldt in the eighth finals in 1 minute and 35 seconds. In the previous round he needed only 51 seconds to beat Mamedaly Achyldyyev from Turkmenistan by ippon. He had a bye in the first round.
Van Oostrum met Spaniard Aaron Santamaria Rodriguez in the quarter-finals, who was too strong for Moldovan Vadim Ghimbovschi. If Van Oostrum loses his quarter-final match, he still has a chance to win bronze through the repechages.
Lars van Oostrum, competing in the 90 kilo class, already won the European title in The Hague last month.
