The asylum reception center in the Van der Valk hotel, located in Uden in Brabant, is not allowed to open for the time being. The judge decided this on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the East Brabant court confirmed NRC after reporting from the ANP news agency. The permit, which had previously been issued by the municipality of Maashorst, was suspended by the court for two days.
Earlier in the day, local residents had gone to court. They requested a suspension of the permit until the municipality has assessed their objection submitted on Monday. The court spokesperson said in an explanation that the judge is aware of the dire need for asylum reception in the Netherlands. “But without considering the objection, the municipality presents residents with a fait accompli.” He emphasizes that the judge could not make a final decision in such a short period of time. The judge will consider the case again on Friday. A final ruling will probably follow that day.
The hotel must accommodate about three hundred people who have applied for asylum. They would remain there until October 1, 2026 at the latest. The first buses with potential residents arrived at the hotel around noon on Wednesday, ANP reports. It is still unclear what consequences this ruling will have for the intended residents of the asylum shelter.
