In April last year, the city council of Bergen approved the zoning plan, despite warnings from the province that it violated provincial rules. The plan provided for a new location for an Aldi supermarket on Bergerweg, which currently still houses a drinks wholesaler.

Twelve apartments would be built above the new supermarket, followed by 24 homes. This was to enable the relocation of the existing Aldi branch from the center of Mons. With that, Aldi would also refrain from moving to the Harmony locationabout which promises had already been made.

According to the province, the zoning plan was in conflict with the provincial policy on retail trade, provincial roads and rural development. According to the province, it is part of the Special Provincial Landscape, which must be protected.
