Juanka Peña: “Achieving a healthy relationship is advantageous for both parties”

Since 2015, Juanka Peña has been dedicated to coaching, especially with women, focusing on optimal relationships, personal success and the development of a winning mentality. “First it was my own individual need to achieve personal growth, then I discovered the need to connect with other people, bringing them those tools so they could also achieve healthy relationships,” says Juanka.

– What is a healthy relationship?

They are relationships that become vital for our mental well-being, our emotional health and to be able to develop in our day to day. We understand ourselves as social and emotional beings and we need the contact and support of others to achieve that well-being. A healthy relationship begins with a sense of WE, rather than ME, but without denying the individuality of the parties. Therefore, there is an agreement to go for common goals, in the same direction, but also to respect the individual growth of each person.

– Are healthy relationships always linked to the affective-romantic?

Healthy relationships are not exclusively in the field of romantic love, but also include our family, friends, co-workers and people with whom we contact on a regular basis. With this type of relationship, the desire to connect with the other more often is present. Achieving a healthy relationship is advantageous for both parties.

– What basic characteristics do they have to be considered healthy?

They are several. First, that sense of ‘us’ and not just ‘me’, the emotional understanding of the other, empathy, trust, having common goals, understanding the limits of the other, commitment, respect, honesty, good communication, reciprocity, humor, affection, in the case of couples, intimacy and also a way of dealing with conflicts that may arise. That is, “learn to fight”. How are we going to have our fights? How are we going to solve them? Where are we going to fight and where not?

– What is it and how do you work to achieve a winning mentality?

For the first time there was talk of the ‘winning mindset’ or winning mentality in tennis and it was extrapolated to other sports or even off the court. The truth is that ‘the games we play’ go beyond sports and victories happen first in our minds rather than in reality. It is as simple as this: it is very rare to find a winner who has imagined and repeated an image of defeat before winning. Generally, there is a coherence between what we think and what we achieve afterwards. Now, it’s not as simple as “Imagine winning and you will!” In the processes that we work with my coachees, with my clients, we emphasize confidence in the skills that we are developing and what a person can achieve with those skills, regardless of the circumstances, but it is also the development of resilience and way of facing our defeats that defines us as winners, because we give meaning to what happened, we translate it as LEARNING.

– So a winning mentality can be trained?

The winning mentality is acquired and trained. You are not only born, you can develop, but it requires a suitable environment and the application of what you have learned to the ‘next game’, to the playing field, to REAL LIFE!

– One of the tools you use is Laser Coaching. What does it consist of?

People are struck by the term Laser Coaching, and precisely the term is due to the fact that, as a laser does, we work aiming at a specific objective, in intense sessions, of short duration, of approximately 20-30 minutes. But can’t we stay longer? If we work excellently and resolve the crash, remove the limitation or find a solution to the problem… why would we need more time?

– How did you come to this method?

It was in a convergent way, the method came to me. It was while I was exploring in my sessions, precisely, how to combine NLP, Ericksonian Hypnosis, the use of archetypal and playful dynamics, Non-Verbal Communication and other skills and abilities. When I trained as a Laser Coach I understood that this method allowed me and required me to involve all these capacities. The method contemplated this amalgamation in a quick, structured process with few sessions.

– In addition to the time of the session, how is it different from other types of coaching?

I find in Laser Coaching a more focused work and the ability of the coach to find the breaking point, to explore the obstacles, limits or blockages. Disarming them in a single session already represents an important change for the client. A coaching session cannot last forever, nor can Coaching processes be endless. My clients want to optimize their time and obtain lasting results. We do it through Laser Coaching.

– What are the differences between coaching a man or a woman?

As a teacher, all my courses have had a majority of 60 to 80%, and in some cases 100% female audience. I understood that my message was well received by women and I thanked and deeply appreciate it. I couldn’t close my eyes to this particular one! I think that women tend to have a greater interest in working on what are known as soft skills, knowing how to communicate, personal growth through emotions, seeking to heal relationships or ties and that is precisely where I am focusing all my work, my training and my study. The work we do, whether in group processes or one by one, with each of my clients, surprises me, makes me proud of their achievements, the speed of their progress, their commitment and openness to the change they want to experience. I feel lucky to be able to work with my clients.
