The team couldn’t bear to wait long with the announcement: Just one day after the final race, JP Motorsport announced that it would be contesting the ADAC GT Masters in 2023.
The team around Patrik Krupinski will thus bring McLaren back to the ADAC GT Masters after a nine-year absence, with the exception of their own guest appearances.
There is currently nothing more than the announcement with a picture of the McLaren 720S GT3 from the guest start in Spielberg this year on social media. The team, based in Erkelenz in the Rhineland, took part in both the sprint and endurance races of the GT World Challenge (GTWC) Europe in 2022.
The guest start at the Red Bull Ring this year saw long-time JP regular driver Christian Klien and ex-Lamborghini Junior Dennis Lind. In the GTWC Europe, Lind and Vincent Abril shared the cockpit of the pro car, with Klien joining them in the endurance races. However, the pro car did not take part in all races.
The focus for the whole of 2022 will be on Krupinski and Klien’s Pro-Am vehicle (Norbert Siedler stepped in instead of Klien for just one run). Krupinski and Klien took the runner-up title in the Pro-Am classification of the GTWC Europe Sprint Cup. It remains to be seen what influence the Masters commitment will have in this regard. Both series are coordinated in such a way that there are no scheduling conflicts.
The team should still be known to the German public from its part-time commitment in the 2021 DTM. However, JP Motorsport then clearly rejected the championship. The team has only existed since 2020.
The last season in which a McLaren contested all ADAC GT Masters races was 2014. Back then, MRS-GT Racing competed with a McLaren MP4-12C GT3. JP Motorsport’s aim will be to get the British brand’s first victory in the German GT Championship.
The team also announced a cooperation with Zakspeed in the spring. However, this primarily relates to historic motorsport. All further developments remain to be seen – also as a result of the renewed insolvency of the racing team.
