Sad news from Down Under: Renowned journalist Mike Dickson died on the sidelines of the Australian Open taking place in Melbourne. On Wednesday evening, a posting appeared on Dickson’s profile on X (formerly Twitter). It was his family who addressed the public through the deceased’s account.
“We are devastated to announce that our wonderful husband and father, Mike, collapsed and died during the Aus Open in Melbourne,” it said. “For 38 years he lived his dream, covering sport around the world. He was a great man and we will miss him terribly.” The message was signed by the names Lucy, Sam, Ruby and Joe, Dickson’s family.
Tennis stars mourn: “Terrible news”
The news of Dickson’s death shocked the stars of the scene. Boris Becker wrote on X: “Terrible news from Melbourne. My condolences to the family of Mike Dickson, who died this morning. Rest in peace, Mike.”
Top star Novak Djokovic also expressed his condolences on Nadal’s thoughts are with Dickson’s family and with “our tennis family for their loss.”
The ATP Tour said goodbye to the journalist with an emotional posting. “It is with deep sadness that we learned of the death of Mike Dickson. As a long-time member of the tennis family and winner of the ATP Ron Bookman Media Excellence Award, we will greatly miss Mike’s love of the game and his presence on the tour,” said X. ” Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues in the media.”
Dickson was still on duty in Australia on Tuesday. He accompanied Emma Raducanu’s first round match. The subsequent interview with her was his last.
