Matthäus: FC Bayern should change captain

In order to convince Joshua Kimmich to extend his contract with FC Bayern, Lothar Matthäus brings up an idea: the midfielder should receive the captain’s armband. “The people in charge at FC Bayern and Vincent Kompany should think about whether they promote Kimmich to captain early – despite Manuel Neuer and Thomas Müller. And I say that with all respect for Neuer and Müller,” explained Matthäus in the “Sport Bild” .
Kimmich’s contract in Munich expires in the summer and the national player is already wearing the captain’s armband in the DFB team after Manuel Neuer ended his career in the national team.
However, Neuer is still the captain at FC Bayern, even if the 38-year-old goalkeeper is only expected to stay with the club until 2026. “Holding both offices at the same time is something historic, which would appeal to him and would be a great honor,” said Matthäus about Kimmich.
The record national player does not rule out implementing the captaincy change this season, but sees possible risks in it. “We could discuss changing the captain in the winter, although that could cause unrest in the club before the start of the second half of the season,” said the 1990 world champion. Nevertheless, Matthäus is in favor of making Kimmich captain by the new season at the latest .
He is convinced that Neuer could handle such a decision. “Manuel could cope with that, he doesn’t have to insist on office after all these years,” added Matthäus.
