Thomas Tuchel’s time at FC Bayern will end in just a few weeks. Both sides have agreed to separate on June 30th. However, former Munich player Thomas Helmer sees the decision critically – and the outgoing coach as a scapegoat.
“The unrest has been there the whole time over the past few months. In my opinion, too much is being tied to the coach himself,” explained the 58-year-old in an interview with “Focus”.
Tuchel came to the German record champions a year ago as Julian Nagelsmann’s successor, but the collaboration did not become a success story.
It is still unclear who will inherit the trainer at Säbener Straße. Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso is considered the desired solution by the Bayern bosses.
But FC Bayern will not only change in the coaching chair. Those responsible are apparently planning a major change in the team.
Helmer expressly supports this plan: “I do believe that we need to talk about one or two players internally.”
FC Bayern: Thomas Helmer calls for an experienced six
One of Bayern’s most prominent sales candidates is Joshua Kimmich, who is experiencing a season with more downs than ups.
“He also has to decide for himself what is good for him. Maybe he will attack again under the new coach and find his old strength. The decision is his,” said Helmer, summing up the all-rounder’s situation.
The 1996 European champion added: “A Thomas Müller will no longer play five top games in a row, he knows that himself.” But the long-running favorite will not be changing; it was only extended again until 2025 in December.
According to Helmer’s assessment, FC Bayern should add to the number six in the summer.
“I see a need for a defensive network in the defensive midfield; an experienced player would be very good for the team,” he said: “Nevertheless, I believe that Aleks Pavlovic can play a central role in the coming years.”
