On June 29, 1986, Jorge Luis Burruchaga he provided an exhibition of mental lucidity, physical resistance, cold blood and personality to convert the decisive goal that gave the Argentine National Team its second and last World Cup.
From that time of glory in Aztec lands, Burruchaga preserves the teachings of Bilardo, the spirit of camaraderie, the vocation of solidarity together with the entrepreneurial impulse together with a group of men who gave Argentine society one of the most unforgettable moments of collective joy. . Before, they were united by the frenzy of triumph, the competitive outburst and the desire to remain in history. Now he rediscovers, several of them, the passion for wine.
This remarkable versatile midfielder who remains in the memory of those who saw him play spoke with NOTICIAS about the things that usually bring happiness to Argentines: soccer, friendship and good wines.
News: How did you get involved in the Héroes and La Final wine project?
Jorge Burruchaga: The project arose from Oscar Ruggeri and a friend of his who works at the Mendoza Vineyards winery. The purpose of this undertaking is have a shelter to continue helping each otherthe Champions of 86.
News: Does the result of sales have solidarity purposes?
Burruchaga: Bilardo always told us: We have to be together, united. We played in another era where football was different, and although it is not my case, some boys have certain problems. That is why we came up with the idea of making a wine with all the names of the people who were part of it, from the players to the technical and medical staff, on the labels. The ultimate goal of helping Champions and their families is what makes us happy.
News: He had the opportunity to play with Bochini and Maradona. What would you highlight about each of them?
Burruchaga: Of those of my time they were without a doubt the two best and fortunately I shared the court with both. Bocha at the South American level, because he did not have the opportunity to try himself in European football. He marked an era, he was an unpredictable player, he allowed us all to score goals through his magic. Diego was of a different caliber. He was capable of playing anywhere on the court with his dribbling, his genius, he brought a charisma, a unique leadership that his early and unfortunate departure continues to mark.
News: Is Diego the best player you’ve seen on a court?
Burruchaga: For me yes. He is the best of all the ones I saw and also of all the ones I played with. Beyond the fact that today we have Messi, I cannot say that he is less or more, but that the times are incomparable. Diego was amazing Having shared a team with him is the dream of every footballer. When you are World Champion, you come with the cup and see a whole country that rejoices and thanks you for a sporting success, it is an unforgettable satisfaction. As Bilardo told us: “Glory is priceless”. To this day they have not won a World Cup again, it is not easy, but in 1986 we had the opportunity to play with that monster called Diego who was willing to take on the world.
News: This is a World Cup year, we have just won the Copa América and the Finalissima. Could Argentina be champion?
Burruchaga: History marks that Argentina and Brazil are the two South American countries that can fight it out with the Europeans. Argentina, Brazil, France, Germany, a bit are always the same ones that are running. Argentina is doing very well today, compared to four years ago, it will arrive with a formidable state of mind, having won the Copa América at the Maracanã against Brazil. Soccer-wise they remained barbaric, they won the Qualifiers entering the World Cup four dates earlier. There is also the great performance of the new players who came after that very good litter who unfortunately were denied the titles. It is noted that they were able to put together something around the figure of Leo. Messi today is different, released.
News: Messi is going to arrive at the age of 35, could that harm him?
Burruchaga: I think that Messi beyond his 35 years, which logically means that he is not the same as years ago, is whole. He today he continues to do his thing. He is learning to play in a different way, as he happened to Diego and to all of us when we began to get older (laughs). You have another wisdom, another overview of the game, experience is not bought and Leo knows that.
News: What did you feel at the moment of the goal against Germany, in the final?
Burruchaga: When I converted, I knelt looking at the sky, I thought of my old lady. And that she did not want me to play soccer, we were many brothers, we had to work. I was making a goal that practically gave us a championship. My old lady got resources from anywhere for her to play. My brothers helped. Later, when I lowered my head I saw Checho Batista who came to greet me (smiles), Diego, Negro Enrique…and it is a unique happiness. They are difficult moments to describe in words, like the births of my children. It was the greatest happiness I had on the court, without a doubt. What does it mean to touch the sky with your hands? A bit of all that.
