Jordan Henderson has really been an Ajax player since last night. AT5 just spoke for the first time at a packed press conference with Ajax’s new number 6. That was, among other things, about that shirt number, because Henderson actually had very different ideas about it.
“I saw that number 14 was still available,” says the Englishman, who played with that number at Liverpool. “So at first I thought: that’s a good thing. This is ‘meant to be’. But then I was talking about it with a friend. And when we were talking about it, I suddenly thought: wasn’t that Cruijff’s song? And then he said: I think that’s why the number is no longer used. Then we looked it up on Google and then we understood,” he says laughing.
English wine
He is completely fine with the fact that Henderson will now play with number 6. “14 was an important number for me when I played for Liverpool, but I have had many other shirt numbers. Ajax came with number 6 and that also suits me well. My son’s birthday is on the sixth and… My father used to play that song. So it’s good.”

With Henderson, Ajax has brought in a veteran, he is now 33 years old. When asked if he is like an aged ‘English wine’, he answers: “I feel very good physically and I take good care of myself. My life is completely focused on football. It has been that way since I was little.” “I hope to be able to play football for a long time.”
No debut yet on Sunday
It is still unclear when Henderson will be seen in an Ajax shirt for the first time. This has to do with his visa and work permit. He won’t be there on Sunday anyway. Ajax will then play against RKC Waalwijk in the Johan Cruijff Arena. “I can’t wait until I can play. I have already watched the training and the team is full of talent. I hope to be able to help them with my experience.”
