Joni Mitchell will be performing her first headlining concert in over 20 years in the summer of 2023. As fellow singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile said on comedian Trevor Noah’s “Daily Show,” Mitchell will perform on June 10, 2023 in Washington, DC. Carlile himself will play a day ahead of Mitchell as part of the two-day event titled Echoes through the Canyon.
“Joni Mitchell will be performing,” Carlile said. “No one has been able to buy a ticket to see Joni Mitchell perform in 20 years… so this is a huge deal… and it’s going to be awesome!” The event was also announced on the artists’ official Instagram accounts. It is subtitled “Joni Jam II” in reference to previous jam sessions at Mitchell’s apartment.
In July 2022, the Canadian singer-songwriter gave her first concert in 20 years at the Newport Folk Festival in the US state of Rhode Island. She played there as part of a jam session with Carlile and other artists such as Marcus Mumford and country singer Wynonna.
“Joni in Newport was a historic event. It reminded us what is possible through the love of music,” Carlile wrote on Instagram. She and Joni were both sure that there had to be another appearance. “She just had too much fun…as did all of us!! We lay up all night wishing we could relive it.”

Mitchell played her last headlining concerts in 2000 on the tour for her 17th album “Both Sides Now”. Her last album was released in 2007 with “Shine”. Since then, she has struggled with serious health problems. Mitchell had a brain aneurysm in 2015 and had to learn to talk and walk again afterward.
