Jongbloed, story of Cruijff’s Holland goalkeeper

One of the protagonists of Greater Holland in the 1970s has passed away at the age of 82. The “tobacconist” goalkeeper played in two world finals, almost by accident…

When goalkeepers were crazy, Jan Jongbloed was the craziest of them all. He smoked a pack of cigarettes a day, spent his days fishing, he liked to revel with friends, there was always another round of beer to do. Then the women. And communism, of course. The passion for politics was equal to that for the good life. For years he had a semi-professional contract, which allowed him to work in the family tobacco shop in Amsterdam, the city where he was born and where he has always lived. Hence his nickname: “The Flying Tobacconist”. He passed away today, he was eighty-two.
