The Dane crowned himself the overall winner of the Tour of France on his second tour participation. With this, Vingegaard creates a historic triumph.
Jonas Vingegaard became the second Dane to win the Tour de France after Bjarne Riis. The 25-year-old crossed the finish line with the peloton on Sunday’s final stage in Paris and, as expected, successfully defended his yellow jersey. In the overall standings, Vingegaard is more than three minutes ahead of defending champion Tadej Pogacar from Slovenia and more than eight minutes ahead of third-placed Welshman Geraint Thomas. Riis had won the Tour in 1996 as captain of the German team Telekom.
Jasper Philipsen won the 115.6 kilometer final stage. The Belgian prevailed on the Champs-Élysées in a bunch sprint ahead of Dutchman Dylan Groenewegen. Third was the Norwegian Alexander Kristoff.
In addition to the yellow jersey, Vingegaard also won the red dotted dress for the best climber. Second in this ranking was Simon Geschke from Berlin, who had only been pushed aside by the Dane on the last mountain stage. The Belgian Wout van Aert won the green jersey for the points with the best points.
Pogacar was the best in the under-25s junior rankings and received the white jersey. The 23-year-old has now held the jersey for a total of 54 days, just one day away from Jan Ullrich’s record.
