The Svenska Fotbollförbundet (SvFF) will have a foreign coach on the bench for its national team for the first time since 1961. The Dane Jon Dahl Tomasson succeeds Janne Andersson after missing qualification for the European Championships in Germany. The 61-year-old separated at the end of November after many years of collaboration.

The 47-year-old Dahl Tomasson, who played as a professional for AC Milan and VfB Stuttgart among others, was recently released from Blackburn Rovers after a year and a half. At the Championship club he collected 1.51 points per game. Before his involvement in England, Dahl Tomasson already worked in Sweden for the 23-time champions Malmö FF. Dahl Tomasson, who was recently loosely linked to HSV, will receive a contract until the 2026 World Cup, which will be automatically extended if qualification is successful.

In Group F of the European Championship qualification, Sweden only ended up in third place, ten and nine points behind Belgium and Austria. The qualification was clearly missed. Test matches against Portugal and Albania are scheduled for March. “I am extremely happy and proud that we have been able to retain a national team coach of Jon’s caliber and I am very pleased with the work done and the process we had to find the best solution,” said Andrea Möllerberg, Secretary General of the Swedish Football Association.
