The 47-year-old Tomasson, a striker in the past for Feyenoord and AC Milan, among others, is strongly associated with the national coachship of Sweden. Tomasson is Denmark’s all-time top scorer with 52 goals in 112 international matches. From 2016 to 2019 he was assistant national coach at Denmark.
Tomasson was assisted by Remy Reijnierse at Blackburn Rovers. The 62-year-old coach from Rhenen has also been an assistant coach at VfB Stuttgart, Sheffield Wednesday and Malmö FF in recent years. Before that, he worked for the KNVB for many years as an assistant or head coach at the Dutch Juniors and the Oranje Leeuwinnen.
The duo left Blackburn Rovers by mutual agreement. Last season, Tomasson finished seventh in the Championship, meaning Blackburn Rovers just missed out on qualifying for the play-offs for a place in the Premier League.
This season was a lot more difficult from the start. The marriage did not improve last week when the club failed to sign American striker Duncan McGuire, even though he was already in Blackburn on Deadline Day.
The Dane signed a three-year contract with the English club in June 2022. Tomasson previously worked in Sweden at Malmö FF. With that club he won the national title in 2020 and 2021. Tomasson was a trainer in the Netherlands at Excelsior, Roda JC and Vitesse (assistant).
Blackburn Rovers also immediately made it clear on Friday evening who will succeed Tomasson at Ewood Park. That is John Eustace, who was fired from Birmingham City in October and was succeeded by the now fired Wayne Rooney.
