Joining buffet helps against loneliness: “I am always alone at home”

Every month a buffet is organized in De Schoof in Wervershoof. A club of about ten volunteers ensures that a meal is ready for anyone who wants to join. At the moment, it is mainly the elderly who are queuing up. “You just notice that people really need it,” says a volunteer. Reporter Sander Huisman took a seat and spoke with volunteers and visitors.

The sit-down buffet originated from an initiative of the Municipality of Medemblik in various neighborhood centers, but continued by an enthusiastic group of volunteers. After each dinner, the group discusses what will be on the menu next time. Mostly meals that people do not make at home: some Mexican, Indonesian or richly filled salads.

Some of the people who join, linger after they have shuffled that afternoon. So when the other people come in, it is already a pleasant affair for the members of the shuffleboard club who have lingered.
