He’s not doing it again! Big surprise in the fight to succeed British Prime Minister Liz Truss: Boris Johnson has announced that he will not run for the Tories’ party leadership – and thus not for the prime minister’s post either.
Although he has the support of the MPs needed to run, he has concluded that “it just isn’t the right thing to do” because “you can’t govern effectively if you don’t have a united party in Parliament”.
Whether he really has enough support among MPs is not certain: other sources say he is missing quite a few.
Johnson resigned as British Prime Minister a few weeks ago after numerous scandals. His successor Liz Truss, on the other hand, had thrown in the towel after just a month and a half after a reign marked by financial market turbulence and political turmoil. The Tories want to clarify in the new week who will succeed Truss.
