American actress Johnny Depp said on the fifth day of his defamation trial that he had still not seen the first one Pirates of the Caribbean to his film.
The role of Pirate Jack Sparrow in the film series is one of Depp’s best known and has contributed to his worldwide popularity.
Nonetheless, Depp said he believed in his role character “wholeheartedly”.
The actress also testified at the trial, denying that she had beaten her ex-wife Amber Heardia.
Depp, 58, and Heard, 35, were both present on the fifth day of the trial at County Circuit Court in Virginia.
Depp told the jury that he was concerned about the allegations of ill-treatment.
“There were quarrels and the like, but I myself never went to the point where I had beaten Miss Heard in any way,” Depp said.
– And I’ve never hit a woman at all in my life.
Underlying previous trial
Depp said he was shocked by the allegations and described them as a shock.
One of the actor’s lawyers asked Depp why he had filed a defamation charge against his ex-wife.
– I felt obliged to defend not only myself but also my children, Depp said.
– I wanted to clean my children of this terrible, untrue thing they had to read about their father.
Depp filed the lawsuit after Heard wrote a column for The Washington Post in December 2018 in which he described himself as a public figure representing domestic violence.
Heard did not mention Depp directly in his column by name, but Depp considered the writing to refer to him. Depp demanded $ 100 million in damages.
Prior to the U.S. lawsuit, Depp lost a separate defamation case against The Sun afternoon in London. The British newspaper had called her a “wife-killer” in her story.
