‘John de Mol is disappointed with this’

It cannot be otherwise than that Wendy van Dijk is having an incredible day: she sees another program flop on SBS 6. “Wow, creator John de Mol will not be happy with that.”

After Flirty Dancing flopped, Wendy van Dijk is back with an SBS 6 program in the same genre: Song On The First Face, which she does together with Edsilia Rombley. In this, singles sing a song with each other and that should lead to a romantic click. It is an invention of John de Mol, who is quite out of shape.

John out of shape

John is very concerned that this program is a success, says former SBS 6 boss Tina Nijkamp. “It’s his first studio show since Winston’s quiz show The Best Answer. It has been years since so few of John’s own new formats were launched in a TV season and that makes this title extra exciting.”

To do everything in its power, SBS 6 has removed one commercial break during the premiere. “Commercial channels do this more often at the start of a very important program for the channel. Of course there are costs involved: probably around 50 to 60 thousand euros.”

Wendy flops again

The result? Not good. The first episode of Song On The First Face attracted 463 thousand viewers yesterday (10 percent market share), not enough for a place in the daily top 15 viewership. “This seems to be Wendy van Dijk’s next flop,” says RTL Boulevard reporter Joost. Maiburg.

And media maker Rens Muller: “Painful for SBS 6: the programs before and after attracted more viewers than the Liedje Op Het Eerste Sight, which was announced with great fanfare.”

“Oh, he’s not happy”

Tina thinks John is really upset. “Oh dear. Not a flying start. Creator John de Mol will not be happy with that. good old Laughing At Home Videos, painfully enough, also scored a lot more viewers in the previous time slot: 549 thousand. No cake today and probably a very quiet app morning for Wendy and Edsilia.”

The score is also disappointing in the important younger target group, Tina knows. Wendy only takes 9.9 percent of the market share. And that while The Big Show with Ruben Nicolai comes in at 27 percent. At the same time, 830 thousand viewers watched his RTL 4 show.

The other most viewed prime-time titles were NPO 1’s De Grote Kleine Treinen Competitie (939 thousand), NPO 1’s Matthijsgaat Door (864 thousand) and RTL 4’s VriendenLoterij Miljonairs (837 thousand).
