Johan is struggling in the burning sun to finish his pond in time

Relaxing by the pool, eating boxes full of ice cream or puffing in search of the coolest spot in the house. Chances are you’re trying to brave the heat like this. Well, Johan van der Meijde (34) from Roosendaal is not. He is plodding hard this weekend, so that his pond is finished in time.

Johan didn’t have much choice, he says. “The tank of the new pond will arrive next Friday. I still had to dig a lot for that. During the week I just have to work, so this was the time to make a big final sprint.”

All this for his great love: “Fishing. I currently have nine koi carp, but they deserved a more spacious house.” You have to give something for it, Johan admits. “Everything for the critters.”

“With a little discipline, a lot of water and music, it is best to keep up.”

But is all that hard work in the bright sun so responsible? “With a little discipline, a lot of water and music, it is best to keep up. And I started extra early this morning, so that I could take a siesta at the hottest time of the day.

The work is now well underway. “The end is in sight. Perhaps it will be ready soon.” In that case Johan knows how he will spend his evening. “Then I’ll sit down for Formula 1. With a beer.”

Fortunately, the end of the work is in sight.
Fortunately, the end of the work is in sight.
