Johan Derksen recovers after a blunder: ‘An epic television disaster’

Johan Derksen is slowly recovering after his huge slip in Today Inside, where he was terribly embarrassed during a discussion with Angela de Jong. “It really was an epic TV disaster.”

It is perhaps Johan Derksen’s most embarrassing TV appearance ever: his ‘discussion’ last week with Angela de Jong in the TV hit Today Inside. He states that she has conducted a smear campaign against Johnny de Mol. The example he came up with? Angela wrote down that Johnny was reported for attempted manslaughter.

‘Does not make any sense!’

An extremely weak argument: after all, all news media have reported on this report against Johnny. In fact, this was the whole reason why he temporarily disappeared from the tube last year. Why Angela is not allowed to write that down, Johan did not make it clear at all. In fact, Angela subtly pointed out that Johnny was declared guilty at VI.

Although Johan has now gone through the dust, according to communication expert Victor Vlam, image damage remains for the VI star. “The concrete accusation that Johan Derksen has, to be very honest, really makes no sense at all. It’s already not really true. Angela de Jong has always been nuanced in this specific area.”

Huge loss

Victor tells in his podcast The Communicados that there was indeed a lot of media that pretty much declared Johnny guilty. “But Angela de Jong doesn’t happen to be. She has received that criticism before and she has fought it from the start. It was not logical for Johan Derksen to raise this point in a big way.”

Co-host Lars Duursma, a debate expert, says: “It was a huge letdown, wasn’t it? It went off like a watering can, Johan Derksen.”

Victor: “Indeed, you are absolutely right. After one minute it was already clear that this subject was disastrous. It really didn’t make any sense at all. It was an incredibly big loss. I’ve actually never seen such a moment on a talk show that someone just completely and totally messes it up for themselves by their own doing.”

‘It’s bizarre’

It is actually almost unbelievable, says Victor. “It may be that someone else attacks you and that you are defeated, but Johan’s worst enemy was himself at the time. He just didn’t have a single point to beat Angela de Jong with.”

He continues: “When you consider that it is in-house, it is your program and you could have prepared it for a week, it is bizarre that it had to end up like this. It’s really bizarre.”

Lars: “It is memorable television.”

Epic disaster

It is generally known that Johan, guided or not, represents the PR interests of the De Mol family. That is precisely why Victor thinks it is so strange that he is apparently not supported by Talpa. “I’m just surprised that no one at Talpa has thought of: let’s just help him prepare, to make him stand out better.”

In the end, Johan was mainly fired, because Angela proved that Johnny was found guilty in advance only at VI. “Then I think: on balance, that is the outcome of this discussion. It has become clear that you were less accurate than Angela de Jong. This is just an epic disaster for them in every way.”
