Working in elderly care, Sanne Ruiter (30) from Onderdijk was looking for more creativity. She retrained as a hairdresser and less than four years later she has a chance to win the Coiffure Award with her own style.
She has not regretted her switch to hairdressing for a second. “I noticed that I wanted to do something creative and also wanted to work with people. That comes together very nicely here,” she says in the Raskappers hairdresser’s shop in Schagen, where she works.
“It is a challenge to make something beautiful out of every hairstyle. Hair is a beautiful material to work with, there are so many different hair types. Many men come here, but I like every hairstyle.”
In her search for more depth in the hairdressing profession, she soon came across the Coiffure Award. Not an unknown phenomenon in the hairdresser’s shop where she works, because colleagues have already participated.
She set to work together with her employer Hans. “I had to quickly find models and come up with a style. I found out that I prefer the 80s/90s. The models are customers, the blouses are from my brother’s wardrobe and the jewelry is from acquaintances. Hans did the photography and I did the styling. We did everything ourselves, very low budget. This in contrast to many other participants. That makes it extra fun.”
Her style stood out so much that she is among the thousands of entries in the last 24. “It’s great that it is seen and appreciated.” It is now a matter of collecting votes. “I’m working on that, but don’t emphasize it. I like it best that I can tell the story behind it.”
You can vote until May 1. The award ceremony is on May 14.
