Spanish coach Joaquín Caparrós will not continue as head of the Armenian national team, which he has led since March 2020, after terminating “by mutual agreement” the contract that linked him to the federation of that country.
“The president of the Armenian Federation, Armen Melikbekyan, met with Joaquín Caparrós on September 28 and talked about the performances of the Armenian national team this year. During the meeting a mutual agreement was reached not to continue with the cooperation“, the Armenian Federation said in a statement on Thursday.
Under the direction of Caparrós, who will turn 67 on October 15, the Armenian national team achieved the greatest success in its history, promotion from League C to League B of the League of Nations.
A category that the Armenian team could not maintain in the last edition of the tournament, in which Joaquín Caparrós’ men certified their return to League C after finishing in last place in group 1 with only one victory in their locker.
The Spanish trainer former coach, among others, of Sevilla and Athletic Club, led the Armenian team to its “best unbeaten streak of games – a total of nine – in its history“said the federation.
Likewise, he highlighted the good role that Caparrós’ men displayed in the qualifying phase for the 2022 Qatar World Cup with victories over Iceland (2-0) or Romania (3-2).
“A series of impressive matches that generated great emotions in our fans”indicated the Armenian Federation, which also highlighted the “professionalism” of the Spanish coach and his “human quality”.
